Chana dal is one of the most protein rich lentil used in Indian Cuisine. Chana dal pulao is a traditional Punjabi Cuisine recipe specially prepared on festive occasions like Lohri and Dusshera. This recipe is a great one- pot meal idea for the weekend and lunch. A combination of Carbohydrates and Proteins all packed in this one meal, that can be packed in lunch boxes or just served as a weekday meal.


  • Wash and soak chana dal for 4-6 hours and rice for 20 minutes. Drain water and keep it aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan and put all whole spices.
  • Now add onions and fry until lightly done, then add ginger garlic paste and fry for 5 minutes.
  • Now add garam masala, carrot, half of coriander and pudina, saute for 5 minutes.
  • Add drained rice and dal, fry for 3 minutes.
  • Add water, salt and cook till rice is done. Once the water is almost absorbed, cover and simmer on low flame.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with raita and enjoy….!!!!

  • Brown rice- 15 gms
  • Carrot- 25 gms (chopped)
  • Onion- 25 gms (sliced)
  • Green chillies- 2 (slitted)
  • Ginger garlic paste- 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds- ½ tsp
  • Bay leaf- 2
  • Curry leaves- 7
  • Star anise- 1
  • Cinnamon stick- 1
  • Green cardamom- 1
  • Black cardamom- 1
  • Garam masala powder- ½ tsp
  • Coriander leave- 3 tbsp (finely chopped)
  • Mint leaves- 3 tbsp (finely chopped)
  • Water- as required
  • Oil- 1 tsp
  • Salt- as per taste
