Why does my weight fluctuate daily??

Many people ask me, “Why does my weight fluctuate daily”? Even after consistent lifestyle practices there are always some fluctuations in weight.

First of all it’s totally normal for your weight to fluctuate by 1-2 kgs. However, many of our clients get extremely concerned if their weight jumpsovernight even after a good diet and exercise.

It’s hard not to worry when you see the scale jump a kilo or two overnight or, worse, the same day. You need to understand that such weight fluctuation in a day can mean any of the following things:-

Water Retention

It is almost next to impossible to gain 1-2 kgs just by food in a couple of days. A dramatic increase in weight could be due to water retention.

Eating, drinking, urinating, bowel movements, exercise – everything can affect your body water composition and, therefore weight. For example, high-carb and high-salt foods lead to water retention and an increase in weight.

Menstrual bloat

Women tend to retain water during their menstrual cycle owing to hormonal fluctuations. For this reason, it’s best for women not to weigh themselves during their menstrual cycle.

Alcohol

Alcohol is a diuretic and causes dehydration in the body, which leads to water retention and hence an increase in weight.

Strength training

Lifting weights or doing body- weight exercises can cause trauma to muscle tissue. This is how the muscle rebuilds itself and makes one stronger and more toned. But in order to rebuild the muscle fiber, your muscles retain water to help speed up the process in the cells. So you may see your weight go northwards.

Bathroom visits

If you cannot use the toilet regularly during the day and then decide to weigh yourself, you may notice a half to one-and-a-half kilogram of weight gain.

Factors that can lead to weight fluctuation include:

  • Sleep Deprivation
  • Stress(also causes water retention)
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal changes, such as menstruation
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Medical conditions,  such as hypothyroidism or diabetes
  • Medications

So, fluctuation in weight is very normal until it is just 1 – 2 kilos. Always maintain your normal and healthy lifestyle, do not worry about such fluctuations. In fact, it is best if you weigh yourself weekly only and that too after visiting your washroom in the morning. This will ensure that you do not stress yourself too much (which ofcourse, is also a major cause of weight gain!!)

Stay hydrated, stay healthy!!!!
