14th November was World Diabetes Day. Awareness for diabetes is absolutely necessary because India is now the ‘Diabetes Capital’ of the world! A lot of people from every age group are now facing this metabolic disorder. But do you know that diabetes can be controlled/managed/reversed with diet alone? Diet is the key to eliminate or manage most of the metabolic disorders.

What is ‘Diabetes’?

Diabetes is a disease that develops due to your body’s inability to make appropriate use of the foods you eat which can be because of insufficient insulin or insulin resistance in your body.

The food we eat is converted within your body into a form of sugar called glucose, which our cells use as a source of energy. Glucose causes an increase in your blood glucose level, which in turn signals the release of a hormone called insulin from the islet cells (the cluster of beta cells in the pancreas known as islets of Langerhans) of the pancreas, a gland in the abdomen. Insulin regulates the level of glucose in our blood and assists in utilizing and storing glucose in our body.
