DOES MY NATURAL DIET CONSIST OF MINERALS?
“My Haemoglobin is low”, “I am anaemic”, “I have calcium deficiency” etc. are extremely common questions that I hear on a daily basis. If I find that there is a severe deficiency of any minerals in their blood, then I advise them to start with supplements. However, if the deficiency is not too alarming I try to include food-stuffs in their diet which can take care of their condition.
Yes, there are certain foods that are rich in these minerals and can take care of your deficiencies too. In this blog I will be telling you the different types of minerals, why they are important and which food sources contain them.
Essential for bone and teeth, maintaining bone strength, nerve, muscle and glandular function, blood clotting.
Food sources: Dairy Products, grains, pulses, millets like ragi and fish.
For healthy nerve and muscle function, bone formation.
Food sources: Green leafy vegetables, legume seeds, beans, tea, coffee, cocoa, nuts, shellfish, spices and soya flour.
Energy production, Haemoglobin, oxygen transport
Haem Iron: Chicken liver, chicken, eggs, salmon.
Non Haem Iron: Cereals, pulses, legumes, fruits, vegetables, dried apricots, almonds, raisins, soya beans, tofu, spinach, wheat germ, kidney beans, baked beans, broccoli lentils.
Essential for cell reproduction, for development in Neonates, wound healing, production of sperm and testosterone hormone.
Food sources: Food sources high in protein are high in zinc.
Nuts, red meat, oysters, poultry, pork and dairy products. Also legumes, whole grain cereals and vegetables (leafy vegetables and roots).
Haemoglobin and collagen production, function of heart, energy production, absorption of Iron
Food sources: Green leafy vegetables, nuts, legumes, dried fruits, muscle meat and shellfish. While wheat, peanut, banana and prunes are mild sources.
